Continuing Education
As a student at three different institutions (Reading, East Anglia, Heriot-Watt), I have been involved at all three in student governance. At Reading I was President of a Society, and was awarded lifetime membership after being voted President of the Year. I also sat as Vice-Chair on the Societies Committee at the Reading University Student Union. At the University of East Anglia I presided over an unfortunate situation, acting as the voice for my fellow classmates to portray our views to the heads of Faculty when our Director of Studies left mid-semester and we had no teaching on a core module. At Heriot-Watt, I became President of the Postgraduate Students Society, presenting to staff on PhD student issues, organising the annual postgraduate student conference, and working with the Student Union as a Student Trustee.
Energy in Buildings
I gained over 5 years in-depth experience with the SAP and RdSAP domestic energy assessment methodology, firstly from my role as an On Construction DEA for an engineering consultancy in Norwich, to my research in Edinburgh for which I created tools in Excel to run energy assessment models. I therefore fully understand the impact that small changes can (and cannot) have on the end results, knowing each line of the equation. Additionally, my 3 years of use of IES dynamic modelling ensures I further understand the physics behind the calculations. Whilst an active researcher, I was a peer reviewer for the journal Building Research & Information, and for the PLEA conferences.
Cake
I made a wedding cake for my best friend in 2014, and caught the bug (cake baking, not a food hygiene related bug!). Work colleagues love the taste testing. I've made a page on here to showcase some of the cakes I've made so far through life. I launched a home baking business in 2018, making cakes for birthdays, baby showers and other special occasions, and although currently dormant I would go back to it again if the time was right.
My approach to life
I prefer a hands-on approach, getting stuck in to make changes. I'm very active on twitter, running my own account, plus an account for my role at SUPA, and the account for the Scottish Centre of the Royal Meteorological Society.
I am a strong believer in the "Be visible or vanish" philosophy, that if no-one knows about your research, it doesn't exist.
My passions are two-fold: improving diversity in STEM, and ending the stigma around mental ill health aiming to improve the situation for researchers, who are more likely than the general population to suffer from a mental health issue.
